The Doctrine Of God

The Living and True God

His Attributes Eternality Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. (Psa 90:2)
Immutability Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. (James 1:17) James 1:17: Vs. 1:17 Every good gift. Both the gift and the act of giving. The point is that all these good things come from above. This statement may have come from an early Christian hymn. Father of lights. God is the source of all light--physical, intellectual, moral, and spiritual--and He does not change.
Holiness The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved. The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people. Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy. The king's strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob. Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy. Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them. Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions. Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy. (Psa 99:1-9)
Omnipresence Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. (Psa 139:7-11)
God is light But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (1 John 1:7)

1 John 1:7: Vs. 1:7 But if we walk in the light. To walk in the light is to live in obedience to God's commandments. Two things result from walking in the light: (1) fellowship with other believers; (2) continual cleansing from sin (since walking in the light brings to light other sins that need cleansing). The contrast of light and darkness characterizes the section
God is love He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. (1 John 4:8)
God is spirit God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24) God is a Spirit. Better, God is Spirit. This describes His nature. must worship him in spirit and in truth. The English word "worship" was originally spelled "worthship" and means to acknowledge the worth of the object worshiped. We should acknowledge God's worth in spirit (in contrast to material ways) and in truth (in contrast to falsehood).
