Lady Liberty Cried

She called proudly from the harbor, welcoming them in.
"Come help us build the greatest country there has ever been.
Come to us now from every shore. No one will be denied."
The welcome call to freedom is what Lady Liberty cried.

But the populous was growing; Too many came too fast.
This open minded freedom, just how long could it last?
For with them came their other gods and soon Ours was defied.
And through a troubled brow She gazed, and Lady Liberty sighed

One day while she was singing her song of liberty
She heard the screams of thousands, and looked around to see
an unknown foe had fooled Her and had flown right by her side.
She watched him wreaking havoc, and Lady Liberty cried.

And looking over her shoulder, She witnessed the attack.
The very ones She'd welcomed in had stabbed Her in the back.
Her innocence was gone; There was no where left to hide.
Her own blood now was flowing, and Lady Liberty cried.

They watched Her falter, trembling, and drop down to her knees.
The flaming torch of liberty had almost touched the sea.
They wondered if their Lady had met Her end that day.
Then all at once She stood and cried, "I only knelt to pray!"
Then with Her wounds still bleeding She stood there with a sigh.
She gazed upon the flaming torch, then held it to the sky.
And with the voices of five thousand Lady Liberty proclaimed:
"By God's own grace these wounds will heal. Well rise up once again!

And those were lost will be remembered from this, our darkest hour.
These concrete walls we'll build again, and over us they'll tower.
And this freedom that I stand for will never more be tried!"
It was tyranny that tried and failed the day Lady Liberty cried.
