Moses for the defeat of Amalek

Exodus 17:8-13 Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. {9} And Moses said to Joshua, "Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand." {10} So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. {11} And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. {12} But Moses' hands <became> heavy; so they took a stone and put <it> under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. {13} So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Gideon and his fleece

Judges 6:36-40 So Gideon said to God, "If You will save Israel by my hand as You have said; {37} "look, I shall put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and <it is> dry on all the ground, then I shall know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You have said." {38} And it was so. When he rose early the next morning and squeezed the fleece together, he wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water. {39} Then Gideon said to God, "Do not be angry with me, but let me speak just once more: Let me test, I pray, just once more with the fleece; let it now be dry only on the fleece, but on all the ground let there be dew." {40} And God did so that night. It was dry on the fleece only, but there was dew on all the ground.

Samson for strength

Judges 16:25-30 So it happened, when their hearts were merry, that they said, "Call for Samson, that he may perform for us." So they called for Samson from the prison, and he performed for them. And they stationed him between the pillars. {26} Then Samson said to the lad who held him by the hand, "Let me feel the pillars which support the temple, so that I can lean on them." {27} Now the temple was full of men and women. All the lords of the Philistines <were> there; about three thousand men and women on the roof watching while Samson performed. {28} Then Samson called to the LORD, saying, "O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may with one <blow> take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!" {29} And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars which supported the temple, and he braced himself against them, one on his right and the other on his left. {30} Then Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines!" And he pushed with <all his> might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people who <were> in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than he had killed in his life.

Hannah for a child

1 Samuel 1:9-20 So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle of the LORD. {10} And she <was> in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish. {11} Then she made a vow and said, "O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head." {12} And it happened, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth. {13} Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. {14} So Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!" {15} And Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord, I <am> a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. {16} "Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now." {17} Then Eli answered and said, "Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him." {18} And she said, "Let your maidservant find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer <sad>. {19} Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. {20} So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, <saying>, "Because I have asked for him from the LORD."

Elijah for return to life of a dead boy

1 Kings 17:19-23 And he said to her, "Give me your son." So he took him out of her arms and carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed. {20} Then he cried out to the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?" {21} And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, I pray, let this child's soul come back to him." {22} Then the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived. {23} And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, "See, your son lives!"

Elijah for fire from heaven

1 Kings 18:30-38 Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me." So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD <that was> broken down. {31} And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, "Israel shall be your name." {32} Then with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD; and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed. {33} And he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid <it> on the wood, and said, "Fill four waterpots with water, and pour <it> on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood." {34} Then he said, "Do <it> a second time," and they did <it> a second time; and he said, "Do <it> a third time," and they did <it> a third time. {35} So the water ran all around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water. {36} And it came to pass, at <the time of> the offering of the <evening> sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, "LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You <are> God in Israel and I <am> Your servant, and <that> I have done all these things at Your word. {37} "Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that You <are> the LORD God, and <that> You have turned their hearts back <to You> again." {38} Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that <was> in the trench.

Elijah for rain

1 Kings 18:41-45 Then Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink; for <there is> the sound of abundance of rain." {42} So Ahab went up to eat and drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; then he bowed down on the ground, and put his face between his knees, {43} and said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." So he went up and looked, and said, <"There is> nothing." And seven times he said, "Go again." {44} Then it came to pass the seventh <time>, that he said, "There is a cloud, as small as a man's hand, rising out of the sea!" So he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Prepare <your chariot>, and go down before the rain stops you.' " {45} Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel.

James 5:17-18 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. {18} And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

Elisha for return to life of a dead boy

2 Kings 4:32-35 When Elisha came into the house, there was the child, lying dead on his bed. {33} He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the LORD. {34} And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands; and he stretched himself out on the child, and the flesh of the child became warm. {35} He returned and walked back and forth in the house, and again went up and stretched himself out on him; then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

Hezekiah for healing

2 Kings 20:1-7 In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, "Thus says the LORD: 'Set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.' " {2} Then he turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the LORD, saying, {3} "Remember now, O LORD, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done <what was> good in Your sight." And Hezekiah wept bitterly. {4} And it happened, before Isaiah had gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying, {5} "Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: "I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD. {6} "And I will add to your days fifteen years. I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for My own sake, and for the sake of My servant David." ' " {7} Then Isaiah said, "Take a lump of figs." So they took and laid <it> on the boil, and he recovered.

Daniel for safety in the lion's den

Daniel 6:10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.

Daniel 6:16-22 So the king gave the command, and they brought Daniel and cast <him> into the den of lions. <But> the king spoke, saying to Daniel, "Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you." {17} Then a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the signets of his lords, that the purpose concerning Daniel might not be changed. {18} Now the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; and no musicians were brought before him. Also his sleep went from him. {19} Then the king arose very early in the morning and went in haste to the den of lions. {20} And when he came to the den, he cried out with a lamenting voice to Daniel. The king spoke, saying to Daniel, "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?" {21} Then Daniel said to the king, "O king, live forever! {22} "My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you."

Zacharias for a child

Luke 1:7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

Luke 1:11-17 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. {12} And when Zacharias saw <him>, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. {13} But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. {14} "And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. {15} "For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. {16} "And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. {17} "He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

The thief on the cross for salvation

Luke 23:42-43 Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." {43} And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly , I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."

Early Christians for Peter in Prison

Acts 12:3-11 And because he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to seize Peter also. Now it was <during> the Days of Unleavened Bread. {4} So when he had arrested him, he put <him> in prison, and delivered <him> to four squads of soldiers to keep him, intending to bring him before the people after Passover. {5} Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. {6} And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers; and the guards before the door were keeping the prison. {7} Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by <him>, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, "Arise quickly!" And his chains fell off <his> hands. {8} Then the angel said to him, "Gird yourself and tie on your sandals"; and so he did. And he said to him, "Put on your garment and follow me." {9} So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. {10} When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him. {11} And when Peter had come to himself, he said, "Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel, and has delivered me from the hand of Herod and <from> all the expectation of the Jewish people."

Paul and Silas in prison

Acts 16:25-26 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. {26} Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed.

God's promises to answer us

In the Old Testament

Psalms 86:7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon You, For You will answer me.

Isaiah 30:19 For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem; You shall weep no more. He will be very gracious to you at the sound of your cry; When He hears it, He will answer you.

Isaiah 58:9 Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, 'Here I <am>.' "If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

In the words of Jesus

Matthew 7:7-11 "Ask , and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. {8} "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. {9} "Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? {10} "Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? {11} "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
John 14:13-14 "And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. {14} "If you ask anything in My name, I will do <it>.

In New Testament letters

James 1:5-8 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. {6} But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. {7} For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; {8} <he is> a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

1 John 5:14-15 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. {15} And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

The basis of God's answers

God's glory

Numbers 14:13-16 And Moses said to the LORD: "Then the Egyptians will hear <it>, for by Your might You brought these people up from among them, {14} "and they will tell <it> to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, LORD, <are> among these people; that You, LORD, are seen face to face and Your cloud stands above them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. {15} "Now <if> You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying, {16} 'Because the LORD was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.'

John 17:1-5 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, {2} "as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. {3} "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. {4} "I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. {5} "And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

God's grace

Exodus 32:31-32 Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! {32} "Yet now, if You will forgive their sin; but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written."

Numbers 14:17-19 "And now, I pray, let the power of my LORD be great, just as You have spoken, saying, {18} 'The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears <the guilty>, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth <generation>.' {19} "Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."

Isaiah 30:19 For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem; You shall weep no more. He will be very gracious to you at the sound of your cry; When He hears it, He will answer you.

2 Corinthians 12:8-9 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. {9} And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

God's faithfulness to his word

Exodus 32:12-13 "Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, 'He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth'? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people. {13} "Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit <it> forever.' "

2 Chronicles 20:7-9 "<Are> You not our God, <who> drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever? {8} "And they dwell in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying, {9} 'If disaster comes upon us; sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine; we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name <is> in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.'

The manner of God's anwers

Sometimes immediately

Numbers 14:20 Then the LORD said: "I have pardoned, according to your word;

1 Kings 17:20-21 Then he cried out to the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?" {21} And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, I pray, let this child's soul come back to him."

Luke 23:43 And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly , I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.
"

Sometimes after a delay

Luke 18:1-7 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, {2} saying: "There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. {3} "Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, 'Get justice for me from my adversary.' {4} "And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, 'Though I do not fear God nor regard man, {5} 'yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.' " {6} Then the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge said. {7} "And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?

Sometimes more than asked for

1 Kings 18:24 "Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, He is God." So all the people answered and said, "It is well spoken."

1 Kings 18:36-38 And it came to pass, at <the time of> the offering of the <evening> sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, "LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You <are> God in Israel and I <am> Your servant, and <that> I have done all these things at Your word.

Ephesians 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

Sometimes different from the request

1 Kings 19:1-9 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword. {2} Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do <to me>, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time." {3} And when he saw <that>, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which <belongs> to Judah, and left his servant there. {4} But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I <am> no better than my fathers!" {5} Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise <and> eat." {6} Then he looked, and there by his head <was> a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. {7} And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise <and> eat, because the journey <is> too great for you." {8} So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God. {9} And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the LORD <came> to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

2 Corinthians 12:7-9 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. {8} Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. {9} And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Sometimes no

2 Samuel 12:15-20 Then Nathan departed to his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it became ill. {16} David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. {17} So the elders of his house arose <and went> to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them. {18} Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, "Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!" {19} When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" And they said, "He is dead." {20} So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate.

In the church gathering together

Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
