Program for Prayer:

pray

Why do we need prayer?

The Lord recently spoke to my heart from Hebrews:

Hebrews 10:31 <It is> a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

We as Christians are quick to believe and claim the protection of the Lord. But we forgot that God also brings judgment and correction to our lives. We become comfortable and forget the early struggles of our Christian lives.

Paul in (Hebrews 10:32-33) brings this point to bear.

But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; {33} Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

Paul challenges us to:

(Hebrews 10:35-39) Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. {36} For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. {37} For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. {38} Now the just shall live by faith: but if <any man> draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. {39} But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

The key to living the Christian life and having the faith we need only comes through prayer. We must exercise prayer as never before.

Matthew 18:19 "Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.

On the following pages I have attempted to present an overview of what the Bible has to say about prayer.

II. To whom should we pray?

To God

2 Chronicles 20:5-6 Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, {6} and said: "O LORD God of our fathers, <are> You not God in heaven, and do You <not> rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand <is there not> power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You?

Praise the LORD!
Matthew 11:25-26 At that time Jesus answered and said, "I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from <the> wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. {26} "Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.

Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

Confession

Psalms 51 Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. {2} Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. {3} For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin <is> always before me. {4} Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done <this> evil in Your sight; That You may be found just when You speak, <And> blameless when You judge. {5} Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. {6} Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden <part> You will make me to know wisdom. {7} Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. {8} Make me hear joy and gladness, <That> the bones You have broken may rejoice. {9} Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities. {10} Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. {11} Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. {12} Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me <by Your> generous Spirit. {13} <Then> I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You. {14} Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, The God of my salvation, <And> my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. {15} O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. {16} For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give <it>; You do not delight in burnt offering. {17} The sacrifices of God <are> a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart; These, O God, You will not despise. {18} Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. {19} Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, With burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.

Matthew 6:12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.

Intercession

Psalms 122:6-9 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May they prosper who love you. {7} Peace be within your walls, Prosperity within your palaces." {8} For the sake of my brethren and companions, I will now say, "Peace <be> within you." {9} Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek your good.

John 17:6-26 "I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. {7} "Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. {8} "For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received <them>, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. {9} "I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. {10} "And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. {11} "Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We <are>. {12} "While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. {13} "But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. {14} "I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. {15} "I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. {16} "They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. {17} "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. {18} "As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. {19} "And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. {20} "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; {21} "that they all may be one, as You, Father, <are> in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. {22} "And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: {23} "I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. {24} "Father , I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. {25} "O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. {26} "And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare <it>, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

Petition

Four conditions that must be met to get assurance that our petitions as Christians will be answered afffirmatively
(Prayer Key to Revival Paul Y. Cho pp67)

1. We must ask in faith!
· Simply asking God for things will not assure you of a postive response. "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive" Matt 21:22
2. We must abide in a relationship with Christ! John 15:7 "If you abide in Me, and My words
· abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
When we abide in prayer, we develop spiritually so that his desires are ours; therefore, this spiritual blank check can be entrusted to us.
3. We must be motivated properly!
· James 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend <it> on your pleasures. It is God's desire to give us all good things, we know that. Yet so, many requests are generated by sheer selfishness. God desires that what we ask should be to the end that He may be glorified.
4. We must ask in accordance with the will of

God!
· Does this mean that we should wonder whether God wants us healed before we pray for healing? No! This is why knowledge of Scripture is so important. The Bible tells us what the will of God is. So, when we ask for something that God has promised us, then we know with certainty that we are praying in God's will.

1 John 5:14-15 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. {15} And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

Psalms 27:7-12 Hear, O LORD, <when> I cry with my voice! Have mercy also upon me, and answer me. {8} <When You said>, "Seek My face," My heart said to You, "Your face, LORD, I will seek." {9} Do not hide Your face from me; Do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help; Do not leave me nor forsake me, O God of my salvation. {10} When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the LORD will take care of me. {11} Teach me Your way, O LORD, And lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies. {12} Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; For false witnesses have risen against me, And such as breathe out violence.

Matthew 26:39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You <will>."

Matthew 26:42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done."

IV. How should we pray?

Divine Elements

Through Jesus Christ

Romans 1:8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

Colossians 3:17 And <whatever> you do in word or deed, <do> all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

In the Name of Jesus Christ

John 14:13-14 "And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. {14} "If you ask anything in My name, I will do <it>.

Ephesians 5:20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Chris
t,

In the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints;

Jude 1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

Human Elements

In the fear of the Lord

Psalms 145:19 He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them.

Proverbs 1:28-29 "Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. {29} Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD,

In faith

The Prayer of Faith three basic steps: (Prayer Key to Revival, Paul Y. Cho pp147-148)

· Our faith must clearly directed toward a goal!
· Our faith must be fixed on a definite and sure target.
· God is precise and he expects us to pray precisely!

Faith is the substance of things! Faith is not the substance of generalities, but of definite thing hoped for. And faith is the evidence of things hoped - again very specific. Hebrews 11:11 By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.

2. The prayer of faith must lead us into visions and dreams!
· The prophet Joel said, Joel 2:28 "And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.

So it is in prayer, that is the prayer of faith. We must learn to visualize the results before God brings them - calling those things which are not as if they were. An idea has two creations first in the mind as a thought and then it is put into physical action.

3. To pray in faith, we must remove all obstacles that may negate God's answer.
· The prayer of faith requires us to continue praying until we have the assurance in our hearts that God has heard us and the answer is on its way. Romans 10:17 So then faith <comes> by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

We must clear all sin out of our lives if we are to have a clear channel to God.

1 John 3:21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.

God can keep every obstacle of sin, bitterness, hatred or fear from blocking the measure of faith that has been given to us.

That measure of faith can grow and develop so that we may pray in faith and see God do the work.

Mark 11:24 "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive <them>, and you will have <them>.

James 1:6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

James 5:15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

In humility

2 Chronicles 7:14 "if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

2 Chronicles 33:12-13 Now when he was in affliction, he implored the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, {13} and prayed to Him; and He received his entreaty, heard his supplication, and brought him back to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD <was> God
.

In repentence

2 Chronicles 6:37 "<yet> when they come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You in the land of their captivity, saying, 'We have sinned, we have done wrong, and have committed wickedness';

Acts 3:19 "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

With all our heart

Deuteronomy 4:29 "But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find <Him> if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Jeremiah 29:13 And you will seek Me and find <Me>, when you search for Me with all your heart.

With a heart free from sin

Psalms 66:18-19 If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear. {19} <But> certainly God has heard <me>; He has attended to the voice of my prayer.

Isaiah 1:15-16 When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; Even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. {16} "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil,

John 9:31 "Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.

With a heart free from doubt

Matthew 21:21 So Jesus answered and said to them, "Assuredly , I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' it will be done.

James 1:5-7 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. {6} But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. {7} For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;

With a forgiving spirit

Matthew 6:14-15 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. {15} "But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Mark 11:25 "And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.

With Confidence

Ephesians 3:12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.

Hebrews 10:19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,

Hebrews 10:35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.

1 John 3:21-22 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. {22} And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

With persistence

Luke 11:5-10 And He said to them, "Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; {6} 'for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; {7} "and he will answer from within and say, 'Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you'? {8} "I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs. {9} "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. {10} "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

Luke 18:1-7 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, {2} saying: "There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. {3} "Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, 'Get justice for me from my adversary.' {4} "And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, 'Though I do not fear God nor regard man, {5} 'yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.' " {6} Then the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge said. {7} "And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?

1 Thessalonians 5:17 pray without ceasing,

With sincerity and simplicity

Matthew 6:5-8 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. {6} "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who <is> in the secret <place>; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. {7} "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen <do>. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. {8} "Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

Mark 12:38-40 Then He said to them in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, <love> greetings in the marketplaces, {39} "the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, {40} "who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."

In accordance with God's will

Matthew 26:42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done."

1 John 5:14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

By accompanying prayer with obedience

1 John 3:22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

V. Does God answer the prayers of his people?

Remarkable answers to prayers

Abraham's servant for a wife for Issac

Genesis 24:12-27 Then he said, "O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. {13} "Behold, <here> I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. {14} "Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, 'Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink'; <let> her <be the one> You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master." {15} And it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. {16} Now the young woman <was> very beautiful to behold, a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came up. {17} And the servant ran to meet her and said, "Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher." {18} So she said, "Drink, my lord." Then she quickly let her pitcher down to her hand, and gave him a drink. {19} And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, "I will draw <water> for your camels also, until they have finished drinking." {20} Then she quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, ran back to the well to draw <water>, and drew for all his camels. {21} And the man, wondering at her, remained silent so as to know whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. {22} So it was, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden nose ring weighing half a shekel, and two bracelets for her wrists weighing ten <shekels> of gold, {23} and said, "Whose daughter <are> you? Tell me, please, is there room <in> your father's house for us to lodge?" {24} So she said to him, "I <am> the daughter of Bethuel, Milcah's son, whom she bore to Nahor." {25} Moreover she said to him, "We have both straw and feed enough, and room to lodge." {26} Then the man bowed down his head and worshiped the LORD. {27} And he said, "Blessed <be> the LORD God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His mercy and His truth toward my master. As for me, being on the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren."
