Bibliology

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (2 Tim 3:16)

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2 Pet 1:21)

"We believe that the Holy Scriptures are contained in two book, namely, the Old and New Testaments which are canonical against which nothing can be alleged."----Blegic Confession of 1561

We believe and confess that the canonical Scriptures of the holy prophets and apostles of both Testaments are the very word of God....For God Himself spoke by the fathers, prophets and apostles, and still speaks to us through...to which nothing may be added or subtracted."--Second Helevtic Confession.

We believe that the Almighty God has made known His mind and will to the children of men in His word which word we believe to be of divine authority, and contains all things necessary to be made known for the salvation of men and women. The same is comprehended or contained in the book of the Old and New Testaments as are commonly received."--Articles of Faith of the Kenukee; Association of 1777.

3. Are the words of the Bible authoritative? Q Question of Inerrancy
4. Do the present books in the Bible belong there?A Question of Canonicity
5. Can we interpret the meaning of the Bible in today's language? A Question of Hermeneutics
6. Can we understand and apply the spiritual nature of the Bible to our life? A Question of Illumination

The first section of Bibliology deals with the doctrine of revelation which involves the content of God's message to us. Here we define and examine revelation, then give the proofs that God has self-disclosed Himself in the Bible.

I. Revelation
Revelation is the act whereby God gives man knowledge about Himself which he could not otherwise know.

The second section of inspiration bases its proofs on the previous arguments that the Bible is a revelation from God. Since God has revealed Himself in the Bible, then we can only conclude that every word is accurate.

II Inspiration

Inspiration is the supernatural guidance of the writers of Scriptures by the Spirit of God, whereby they wrote the divine Word of God, transcribed accurately and reliably.

The third section of Bibliology proves the authority and perpetuity of the inspired revelation. Not only are the words accurate, they are authoritative and without error of any kind.

III. Inerrancy

Inerrancy recognizes that which God revealed and inspired is accurate, reliable, authoritative and without error.

The next section deals with how many book are in the Bible and what is the basis by which one is included. There are only 66 books in the Bible. Other books will not be added and none of the books in the present Bible will ever be proven false.

IV. Canon

The Canon is the standard by which the 66 books in the Bible and their content were determined and the basis by which they were included in scripture.

Once the context and the authority of the Bible is established, the next question involves the correct meaning of the content of Scripture. We do not force external set of rules on the Bible by which to interpret its meaning. Within the Bible, God gave the principles by which we should interpret its meaning.

V. Interpretation

Hermeneutics is the science of biblical interpretation.

Once man learns the rules of interpreting the authoritative Bible, next he must realize that there is a second level of difficulty in understanding Scripture, and that is the problem of spiritual blindness. Because the Bible was authored by God's Spirit and its central theme involves a spiritual message, only those who are in proper relationship to the Holy Spirit can understand its message. Those who are not in proper relationship to God are unable to comprehend its spiritual message apart from spiritual illumination.

VI. Illumination

Illumination is the work of the Holy Spirit in helping the believer understand and apply the spiritual meaning of the Scriptures.

Bibliology attempts to recognize what the Bible claims for itself. Because of its claim, the Bible is the objective Word of God, whether man understands it or not, whether he recognizes it or not, and whether he applies it to his life or not..
